A moving weight subjects joints, ligaments and tendons to a force many times greater than that of the weight itself. Should the exercise and the weight together create too much trauma to the joints, the chance of injury increases.

Cheerleading has always been a finely tuned barometer of social change. In my few decades on earth, I’ve seen the status of saddle shoes and cartwheels and megaphones rise and fall as steeply as the radical and corresponding shifts in sex roles, teen-age fads, parental attitudes and political ideologies. In the late ’50s, when my oldest sister was in high school, being a cheerleader was everything a girl dreamed of. It meant you were beautiful in a conventional (coveted) way, probably dated a muscle-bound athlete and certainly held honored membership in the most elite of social strata. Now I hear that cheerleading is entering yet another new phase in its evolution. According to a wire service report from Montpelier, Vt., there will be no cheerleaders at all when the high school football team stomps the gridiron this fall. Cheerleading there, and elsewhere, is verging on outright extinction. If it sounds as if I have some firsthand knowledge in this area, the truth, alas, is that I do. I was a junior-high cheerleader. I wore black-and-white saddle shoes, bobby socks, a little red jumper and a big black sweater when the weather turned cold. And yes, I probably shed a tear or two at the appropriate cue-a broken bone, a bloody nose, a pulled tendon-not mine, of course.

Dawson was troubled with Achilles’ tendinitis throughout his professional career, so he knew a rupture was possible. After that September afternoon, Dawson went to Eugene, Ore., for surgery to repair the rupture of his left Achilles’ tendon. He later had surgery on his right one after doctors discovered his problem was congenital. The next summer, Dawson tried to return to the Cardinals. At training camp, he was under a team doctor’s care, but he aggravated the left Achilles’ running wind sprints. The Cardinals released him because he could not pass their physical, although they paid for Dawson’s third surgery and paid him $65,000 as required by the NFL. In the back of his mind, Dawson believed he could play football again, but he turned to his current career to help him bide his time while he rehabilitated. Before the 1988 season, at least eight teams contacted Dawson and his agent about tryouts, but his heels still were not strong enough to play. Last March, Dawson gave up all ideas of returning to football.

It’s a tough test for any runner, but particularly for Conover. The 29-year-old from San Luis Obispo climbed to the pinnacle of American marathoning in 1988, surprising nearly everyone by winning the wind-swept U.S. Olympic Trials in New Jersey. Instead, after one of the more intense high school recruiting battles in Utah history, Mitchell selected Utah and its coach, Jim Fassel. San Diego State reserve offensive lineman Steve Blyth, a senior from Richmond, Canada, is out for the season after surgery Wednesday to repair a torn tendon in his right knee, trainer Brian Barry said. The surgery is almost identical to operation Blyth had after injuring the same knee in spring practice. Nickel back David Cooper, a junior from Honolulu, underwent arthroscopic surgery Thursday to repair a bone defect in his left knee. Cooper is expected to recover in two to three weeks, Barry said. . . . Luginbill said reserve defensive lineman Darren Cooley apparently has quit. Cooley, who did not play against Cal State Fullerton Saturday after playing in the Aztecs’ first two games, has not practiced in several days. Cooley, a redshirt freshman from Oklahoma City, sat out last season after undergoing back surgery. . . . A-I think you’re referring to MRI, (which stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging), an important and relatively new development in medical evaluation and diagnosis. It uses computers and magnetic fields to create images of virtually any area of the body, whereas more familiar techniques use radiation or sound waves. For certain areas, particularly the central nervous system, MRI is perhaps better than all other imaging techniques. For example, it has become the single most sensitive procedure for diagnosing multiple sclerosis. It is also beneficial for examining the pelvis, muscles, tendons and ligaments, and various organs such as the kidneys, ovaries and uterus. And, it shows promise for the heart and abdomen as well. Despite these important concerns, MRI has shown remarkable advances within the past years, and its improvement is expected to continue. Some experts claim, in fact, that MRI may ultimately replace the more conventional imaging techniques. At present, however, it should be emphasized that MRI is but one of many diagnostic tools available. A medical history and physical examination, along with the use of other laboratory tests and imaging techniques, are all considered part of the complete diagnostic process.
