Conover’s first step back will be a rugged 6.5 miles
[Mark Conover]‘s story, and those of about 6,000 other runners and walkers, will be brought together when the 10th annual 6.5-mile run from Coronado to Balboa Park begins at 7:45 a.m. Sunday. The largest single-day fund-raiser in the country for the Leukemia Society, the race includes a pair of long climbs, one over the Coronado Bridge itself and the other a two-mile ascent into Balboa Park. It’s a tough test for any runner, but particularly for Conover. The 29-year-old from San Luis Obispo climbed to the pinnacle of American marathoning in 1988, surprising nearly everyone by winning the wind-swept U.S. Olympic Trials in New Jersey. But then came a disappointing finish at Seoul’s Olympics and surgery on the Achilles’ tendon in his right foot. WHO: Approximately 6,000 runners/walkers. Included in the elite field are: Men — Thom Hunt, [Bill Reifsnyder], [Matt Clayton], Matt Guisto, Steve McCormack, Alan Scharsu, Harry Green, Danny Grimes, Brad Hudson, Chuck Trujillo, Milfred Tewawina, Bo Reed, Jim Klein. Women — Kellie Cathey, Tina Ljungberg, Jeanne Lasse-Johnson.
