Weights can do harm to some exercisers

In an aerobic workout, however, weights have met with some controversy. Dance exercise and most other aerobic workouts can cause one’s joints to bend rapidly and absorb considerable force. A moving weight subjects joints, ligaments and tendons to a force many times greater than that of the weight itself. Should the exercise and the weight together create too much trauma to the joints, the chance of injury increases.

NBA to change draft lottery

[Martin Massengale] said the action was spurred by a report that many student-athletes have complained that their sport demands too much of their time. One argument certain to be used against the reduction will be financial, with hundreds of thousands of dollars in television and gate revenue in jeopardy at some schools. # The Fiesta Bowl signed a six-year contract extension through 1996 with NBC television, worth between $25 million and $30 million to the bowl. Tennis Brown shocks Pernfors Jimmy Brown, ranked 128th in the world, upset sixth seed Mikael Pernfors 6-2, 6-0 in the second round of the Prudential-Bache Securities Classic in Orlando, Fla. Pernfors is ranked 31st in the world but has been as high as No. 10. # Former Wimbledon champion Pat Cash, laid up since April with a ruptured Achilles’ tendon, will represent Australia in the Hopman Cup mixed teams competition from Dec. 26 to Jan. 1. # Martina Navratilova got off to a bumpy start but rallied to beat Tin Scheuer-Larsen 6-3, 6-1 in a two-hour match as the top-seeded U.S. team shut out Denmark for a Federation Cup quarterfinal berth against Austria. Chris Evert defeated Karin Ptaszek 6-1, 6-1. . . . Second seed Slobodan Zivojinovic of Yugoslavia was upset by Australian Shane Barr 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) at the Queenland Open in Brisbane, Australia. Etc. # Bill Elliott was the first and fastest qualifier, taking the pole for Sunday’s All Pro Auto Parts 500 NASCAR race with a lap of 174.081 miles per hour on the 1.5-mile, high-banked Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway oval. . . .

Broncos rehire Shanahan as assistant

[Mike Shanahan] will become Denver’s quarterback coach under the contract, and is expected to begin leading practices later this week, said Matt Cook, a Broncos spokesman. Shanahan, 37, guided the Raiders to a 7-9 record in his first season as head coach in 1988. This year, after winning their opener, the Raiders lost their next three games. He was replaced by Art Shell, who became the first Black head coach in modern NFL history. THEIR KINGDOMS FOR A HORSE // Many Texans search for next `great one’

Among the Texans at the Kentucky sale were George Wolff of Sisterdale, Mike Rutherford (who has a ranch in Buda), Tommy Oliphant of Sabinal (who breaks horses for Austin businessman Bill McMorris), trainer Bubba Werner of Fredericksburg and rancher Leon Noack of Rockdale. Wolff and Dr. Richard Mays recently purchased a stallion by Alydar, the sire of Easy Goer. Festive Lad, out of the stakes-winning Secretariat mare Festive Lady, will stand at Mays’ Key To The Hills farm at Boerne next year. Festive Lad sold for $525,000 as a yearling but bowed a tendon while in the care of Hall of Fame trainer Leroy Jolley. Celts hit bonanza without winning

One looks at the figures, it adds up to a relative bonanza. And the profit came despite the Celtics’ elimination in the first round of the playoffs, a series that saw Boston play only once in Boston Garden. It came despite their losingest season since 1978-79. And it came despite the absence of Larry Bird, who missed 76 games after undergoing surgery to remove bone spurs from both Achilles’ tendons. the guaranteed string of sellouts – 408 and counting – and lucrative local broadcast rights enabled the Celtics to survive quite handsomely. Those two established financial bases, plus the expiration of virtually all of its depreciable assets, combined to turn the worst year on the court in 10 years into one of the most profitable in the club’s 42-year history. For the season, the Celtics listed revenues of slightly more than $27.3 million, down marginally from the $28.4 million the year before. Expenses, despite the early playoff exit, were up over 1987-88 by a little more than $300,000 to $18 million.
