PAIN!; It’s your body’s way of attempting to tell you something

Sprains involve ligaments, the fibrous tissue that attaches bone to bone. One-third of all sports injuries are sprains. Unless you lose function, you can treat mild strains and sprains yourself with RICE. If the pain lasts longer than a day or two, see a doctor. Tendinitis is a common overuse injury. A tendon, the sheath covering the fibrous tissue that connects a muscle to a bone, becomes inflamed. This pain is usually generally distributed and starts right after exercise. If ignored or untreated, it may progress into numbness and a tingling sensation. The RICE formula is often the best treatment. Pain at a point in the middle of a bone may signal a stress fracture, tiny cracks in a bone that can come from bending it too frequently. The rate of bone breakdown from activity, a normal process, is greater than the rate of bone formation, or repair. The pain of a stress fracture that’s restricted to a specific area may be relieved by rest.

Mack is transferred to Ohio reformatory

NEW ORLEANS – New Orleans Saints running back Rueben Mayes, sidelined since training camp with pain in the Achilles tendon of his right leg, will undergo surgery next week and be out for the season. Mayes will have the same surgery used to repair his frayed left Achilles tendon following the 1986 season. In that surgery, physicians grafted fibers from Mayes’ thigh onto the damaged tendon, a procedure known as augmentation.

Argos try to revive a weak receiving corps

The three veteran imports, Jeff Boyd, Darrell Smith and Emanuel Tolbert, had a total of 11 seasons in which they had caught passes for more than 1,000 yards. And in young Paul Masotti, Argos had a Canadian who almost made the Washington Redskins. With Tolbert seemingly ready to return to action, [Bob O'Billovich] will have three-quarters of his main receiving corps back in action. On top of that, he may also have Brian Bedford, who was impressive in his one game as Boyd’s replacement, back in the lineup. Bedford injured his achilles tendon in his only game as an Argo. Tolbert, who had returned to Toronto after four straight 1,000- yard seasons with Calgary, suffered a severe tear of his groin muscles while practising for the Sept. 9 game against Saskatchewan. Then, early in that game, he was joined in the infirmary by Boyd, who broke his ankle when he collided with teammate Eric Hoskins, who was Tolbert’s replacement.

Argos’ Boyd to sit out last two games

She mended [Jeff Boyd]‘s left ankle, which he broke in the Sept. 9 game against Saskatchewan, quite nicely. However, she left behind a calcium deposit which irritates the muscles and tendons as he moves about and causes him no uncertain pain. Argos and Bombers are tied for second. If they finish the season in a deadlock, the Argos will get home field advantage on the strength of their two victories in the three meetings between the teams this year. It was after two futile seasons of trying to find a replacement for [Terry Greer], who jumped to the NFL in 1986, that the Argos obtained Boyd in a trade with Winnipeg.

Haste makes waste in Texas racing

Today, we have one Class 2 track, G. Rollie White Downs, limping along trying to survive, several others still trying to find financing, two greyhound tracks being built and another involved in a legal battle, and no prospect for the premier entity, a Class 1 thoroughbred track that would put Texas in the nation’s racing spotlight. Now that the Breeders’ Cup races are over, the only big money- event left on the 1989 racing calendar is the $1.8 million Japan Cup, about a 11/2-mile event Nov. 26 at the Tokyo Racecourse. Hawkster, Yankee Affair and El Senor head the list of North American invitees, although Hawkster would have to be considered a “native” in Tokyo now that a Japanese syndicate purchased the world record- holder at 11/2 miles on the turf. The Comanche Indian tribe is negotiating to purchase an existing non-pari- mutuel track near Lawton, Okla., and establish a pari- mutuel track at the site some 50 miles north of Wichita Falls. . . . The 97-day meeting that just concluded at Birmingham Race Course in Alabama showed a daily wagering average of $383,546, an increase of 6.7 percent over its ill-fated opening season in ’87. But the daily average attendance was down 19.6 percent. . . . Cash Asmussen lost his only mount in the Breeders when French-owned Golden Opinion was injured. The 3-year-old filly has now been retired, with $369,234 in earnings, because of a tendon injury.
