Are Cheerleaders on the Way Out?

Cheerleading has always been a finely tuned barometer of social change. In my few decades on Earth, I’ve seen the status of saddle shoes and cartwheels and megaphones rise and fall as steeply as the radical and corresponding shifts in sex roles, teenage fads, parental attitudes and political ideologies. Now I hear that cheerleading is entering yet another new phase in its evolution. According to a wire service report from Montpelier, Vermont, there will be no cheerleaders at all when the high school football team stomps the gridiron this fall. Cheerleading there, and elsewhere, is verging on outright extinction. If it sounds as if I have some firsthand knowledge in this area, the truth, alas, is that I do. I was a junior-high cheerleader. I wore black-and-white saddle shoes, bobby socks, a little red jumper and a big black sweater when the weather turned cold. And yes, I probably shed a tear or two at the appropriate cue – a broken bone, a bloody nose, a pulled tendon – not mine, of course.

Mayes sidelined by heel injury

[Rueben Mayes] will have the same surgical procedure physicians performed on his frayed left Achilles tendon following the 1986 season. In that surgery, physicians grafted fibers taken from Mayes’s thigh to the damaged Achilles.

VDTs dictate changes in work and workplace

The CSA guidelines will not cover the alleged dangers of VDTs to the female reproductive system, an ongoing scientific controversy. As well, growing evidence is linking VDTs and the rise in so-called “musculoskeletal” injuries. These range from aching backs and necks to nerve and tendon disorders, known collectively as repetitive strain injury — referred to by doctors as RSI. “Contracts have provided for glasses for working on a VDT screen,” [Dave Eisen] said. “There have also been improvements in the VDT screen itself — its design, the contrast of characters. It’s generally understood that lower lighting levels are desirable and, increasingly, we have recognition of the importance of getting rid of screen glare.”

Testaverde questionable // Ferguson prepared to step in at quarterback if needed

TAMPA – Don’t be shocked if Joe Ferguson starts at quarterback in place of Vinny Testaverde when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers take the field against Detroit on Sunday. A tendon in Testaverde’s right knee was bruised during the Bucs’ 42-35 victory over Chicago, and his official status for the upcoming game weakened from probable to questionable Wednesday. “Generally speaking, if a guy doesn’t practice, he doesn’t play, but that’s not always the case,“ [Ray] Perkins said. “Vinny could play even if he misses the whole week. But I feel comfortable with Joe. If I didn’t, he wouldn’t be on the team.“

Avoiding injury from high heels

As with most things in life, there is a tradeoff. The price for wearing high heels can be shorter Achilles’ tendons and calf muscles that are more developed than the muscles in the shin area. Both of these can lead to greater susceptibility to injury. Despite all the articles written by medical doctors and feminists condemning high heels, however, most women will continue to wear them. One way to minimize the effects is not to wear high heels all the time. Wearing flat shoes, slippers, aerobic shoes or other sports shoes allows your calf muscles and tendons to stretch to their normal length.

BIRD OUT OF HIS CAGE, COULD GIVE WINGS TO CELTIC TITLE HOPES

Dennis Johnson worked his way free on the perimeter and drilled a three-point shot with one second left to drill Golden State. [Larry] Bird, less than 72 hours away from having the tendons peeled away from the bone on his ankles, was one of the first players to congratulate Johnson. Without Bird, the Celtics struggled to a 42-40 record and were knocked out in the first round of the playoffs. Without basketball, Bird struggled to retain the cocksure attitude that has made him one of the finest NBA players to ever thread a defense with a no-look pass. It took longer than he expected, but Bird is back for the start of NBA’s 44th season, which opens Friday. Two bad ankles and a broken back – compliments of a nasty fall he took while working out with the Boston rookies over the summer – aren’t enough to keep the nine-time All-Star down. Bird is determined to regain his status as the league’s top forward and carry the Celtics back to the top of the Eastern Conference.
