A strange Sunday for quarterbacks

* Doug Flutie, the quarterback [Jim McMahon] once called a munchkin when both were with Chicago Bears, made another comeback with the New England Patriots, but the Pats are a bad football team and even Flutie’s alleged magic couldn’t help in a 31-10 loss to the Bills. He completed 15 of 41 passes. Conservatively three potential TD strikes were dropped. Bills’ [Jim Kelly] completed 12 of 17, three for TDs. * Vinny Testaverde, who had shown signs of a coming of age, managed only 83 passing yards against the struggling, unhappy Minnesota Vikings who won, 17-3 over the Buccaneers. About the only controversy the Vikes haven’t had this year is the one that usually dominates – Who’s No. 1? Wade Wilson or Tommy Kramer? Wilson was firmly established, but yesterday went down in the first quarter and Tommy Kramer directed the victory, withtwo touchdown passes. Notes: Ex-Argo punter Hank Ilesic had his problems with the Chargers yesterday in Phoenix, kicking nine times for a 41-yard average and having six returned a total of 84 yards. Ilesic himself stopped one of the returns to prevent a Cardinal touchdown . . . after four weeks on the injured reserve list, Canadian running back Rueben Mayes is eligible to start practising with the Saints, but there is no word yet on whether the tendinitis of his Achilles tendon will permit it. He hasn’t practised since spring mini-camp.

THE SIDELINES Surgery to Sideline Reuben Mayes

Mayes will undergo the same surgical procedure physicians performed on his frayed left Achilles tendon after the 1986 season. In that surgery, physicians grafted fibers taken from Mayes’ thigh onto the damaged Achilles, a procedure known as augmentation.

Pats’ Hurst on the spot again against Oilers’ Givens today

They usually are. The fourth-round pick from Southern got dumped into the fire when Rod McSwain, who had replaced Ron Lippett (torn Achilles tendon), came down with hamstring trouble. McSwain is on injured reserve and [Maurice Hurst] has the left corner job. He said he intends to keep it, even when McSwain and Lippett come back. “I want them to say, “Maurice is playing good ball and it makes no sense to take him out.’ That’s what I want to happen,” said Hurst as he prepped for a real battle with Houston Oilers receiver Ernest Givens today at Sullivan Stadium.

VILLA TO PLAY REDUCED ROLE AGAINST ATLANTA

Yesterday’s bulletin issued by coach Raymond Berry was that starting left offensive tackle Danny Villa will be unable to perform regular duty Sunday in Atlanta because of a strained flexor tendon in his right forearm. Berry said Dave Viaene will replace Villa in the starting lineup. “It’s sore,” said Villa, explaining why his role will be limited to snapping on punts and placement kicks. “The medical staff is afraid that if I play on offense, I’ll injure it more. I’ll see how I do on the long snaps, though.” Villa is not the only Patriot likely to be sidelined. Although there was no official word on the status of wide receiver Irving Fryar’s left knee, it is probable Fryar will be out against the Falcons.

Sanders sidelined eight weeks

A stress fracture of the fourth metatarsal bone in rookie forward Jeff Sanders’ right foot will sideline him eight weeks, Bulls operations chief Jerry Krause said Thursday night. Veteran guard Craig Hodges (bruised left Achilles tendon), free agent forward Adrian McKinnon (sprained left ankle) and free agent guard Stewart Granger also will not be with the Bulls tonight when they play the Washington Bullets in the Baltimore Arena (6:30, WLUP-AM radio). [Johnny Bach]‘s round-robin test included stops in Racine, Milwaukee and Waukegan. Bach is shy about his chances with a DC-10 or 747. But he believes he could fly a 737, another popular commercial plane.

Johnson’s suffering not limited to field Flu, food poisoning also dog Bruins QB

As [Terry Donahue] put it, freshman tailback Kevin Williams “looked like he started to dominate the game” (52 yards, nine carries) before leaving the Washington game with six minutes left in the second quarter because of a foot injury. He has a sprained arch and possible strained tendons. He will be out for several days and has little chance of playing at Stanford on Saturday, Donahue said. … Punter Kirk Maggio said all he saw were white jerseys on the punt Washington blocked. “If they hadn’t blocked it, the ball would’ve gone straight up because of the adjustment I had to make,” he said. “It would’ve gone about 20 yards.” Maggio had a 63-yard punt against Washington and a 72-yarder against Oregon State. He’s second nationally with a 46.3-yard average. Colorado’s Tom Rowen is first at 46.5. … Linebacker Marvcus Patton is the only other bright spot to UCLA’s season.
