Baseball’s Other Hot Contests; Big Hitters Vie for Batting Crown but Might Not Admit It
”I don’t have any comment on it,” Carney Lansford said not long ago. ”Don’t even bother asking me about it. I don’t care about batting titles and batting races.” ”I’m not saying he’s sitting out on purpose,” said [Tony Gwynn], who has a sore left Achilles’ tendon and a sore right foot. ”I’m just saying if he’s hurt and he’s not playing, it’s hard to catch him. I know Will’s a competitor. He likes to go out there and play. He doesn’t like to sit around. But if they clinch early, they’re going to give him time to regroup and get ready for the playoffs. ”But if he doesn’t play, it’s going to take me two or three games to catch him unless I have a couple of perfect games,” Gwynn said, ”and realistically, that’s not probable at the end because usually you’re going to see guys you’ve never seen before. It’s going to be real difficult.”
