Injured tailback Rueben Mayes’s workout was a bust, and the New Orleans Saints will have to decide what to do with him soon, said Jim Mora, coach of the NFL team. “Rueben ran this morning, and it wasn’t a favorable test,” Mora said Tuesday. “It (right Achilles tendon) didn’t show much improvement from the last time he ran. We’re going to have to make a decision in the next day or so.” One of the options is for Mayes, a native of North Battleford, Sask., to have exploratory surgery, a procedure that could sideline him the entire season. Mayes’s sore tendon has perplexed Saints officials since he reported the pain on the first day of training camp in La Crosse, Wis. Mayes, who signed a $1.6-million U.S. contract in July, can remain on injured reserve two more games. Then he must be activated, waived or begin unlimited practice. Rocky Graziano, a former world middleweight boxing champion, was reported in stable condition and resting comfortably today in Lennox Hill (N.Y.) Hospital after collapsing at his home. Graziano, 68, was taken to the hospital Sunday after he “went limp all over,” his daughter, Audrey Weisman, said. “It doesn’t look good,” Weisman said. “He collapsed totally — physically and mentally.” Weisman said her father went to the hospital last week for a checkup and “came home the next day worse than he’s ever been.” Doctors did not list any diagnosis. Graziano, born Thomas Rocco Barbella on the lower East Side of New York, began his professional boxing career in 1942 and won the title in 1947 when he knocked out Tony Zale. That was the second of three memorable fights between the two middleweights and the only one Graziano won.
