O’Brien-Marino Air Duel / Jets Rally Past Miami, 40-33 / THE AFC

Clark gave Seattle (1-2) the lead with 8:15 left in the first half on a post pattern, faking safety Jim Bowman, starting because Roland James had a groin injury, on his way to the end zone. [Paul Skansi] scored with 1:43 left when rookie cornerback Maurice Hurst, playing because of a season-ending Achilles’ tendon injury to Ronnie Lippett, left him alone in the left corner of the end zone. At San Diego: Rod Bernstine caught a one-yard touchdown pass and ran 32 yards for another score and the Chargers defense pressured Steve BeBerg into five interceptions to give Dan Henning his first victory as San Diego coach.

Unbonded Performance

In the past 30 years, unbonded tendons have been used in some 400-million sq ft of building structures and many square feet of slab on grade in the US. Unbonded tendons, used to posttension prestressed concrete, are normally placed in forms before concrete placement. The tendon high strength steel strand is surrounded by grease and placed in a plastic sheath, which prevents the tendons from bonding with the concrete. The grease guards against corrosion and lessens friction during posttensioning. The major advantages of unbonded tendons include: 1. economics, 2. compact anchorages, 3. their ability to be placed in forms similar to those used in placing rebars, and 4. no risk of freeze induced cracks that may occur in winter grouting. Unbounded tendons do not offer the redundancy of posttensioned bonded tendons. The largest threat to unbonded tendons is corrosion, of which the greatest problems are inadequate grease covering, space between strand and sheath, and poor protection of the tendon’s end anchorage. Total encapsulation is slightly more expensive than other systems but should be considered for corrosive environments.

`DAWG POUND’ IRKS BRONCO OWNER

DENVER – The owner of the Denver Broncos, Pat Bowlen says the failure of Cleveland Brown officials to regulate the behavior of unruly fans at Cleveland Stadium is a “bush-league situation.” Fans in the east stands, known as the “Dawg Pound,” threw dog biscuits, eggs, rocks and two AA batteries last Sunday while the Broncos were backed up near their goal line early in the fourth quarter. Referee Tom Dooley moved the teams to the west end of the field. The former Washington State tailback will undergo the same surgical procedure physicians performed on his frayed left Achilles’ tendon after the 1986 season. In that surgery, they grafted fibers taken from [Rueben] Mayes’ thigh onto the damaged Achilles.

Some programs go beyond the numbers

[Merilee Pfister], who could be seen occasionally squinting at Coach Dan Glenn for signals, did not have her contact lenses, which she wears to correct an astigmatism. She better have the lenses today, though, because Newport Harbor plays in the San Marcos Tournament, where the Sailors will be going eye-to-eye with the likes of Mira Costa and Clark, Nev., the two top-ranked teams in the nation. Runaway Pinto: You didn’t see Martha Pinto’s name in the results for Katella’s girls cross country team Friday morning because Pinto took a wrong turn in her team’s meet Thursday against Esperanza at Yorba Regional Park. She had about a two-minute lead, Coach Mike Cochrane said, but by the time she doubled back and rejoined the pack, Pinto and Cochrane weren’t sure she was legally even still in the race, so she dropped out. Starter Janelle Karlan suffered a slight pull of her Achilles’ tendon on the last point of the Chargers’ volleyball match against Irvine on Tuesday, so El Toro coach Mike Jagd had one day to find a new setter.

Hodges slowed by foot injury

Concerned about the pain in the area of his bruised left Achilles tendon and sprained ankle that sidelined him 13 games late last season, he was hurrying toward the office of team physician Dr. John Hefferon for examination and treatment. He returned to practice Wednesday evening but did not work out. Trainer Mark Pfeil said [Craig Hodges] will be treated daily. Hodges, one of the league’s premier three-point sharpshooters, became the starting shooting guard last season when Michael Jordan was switched to point guard. The 6-3 Park Forest native and eight-year NBA veteran averaged nine points last regular season and 11.2 during the playoffs.

Gophers’ Burton to have bone scan

The first battery of X-rays taken Monday were inconclusive. The X-rays revealed a clouded area on the left heel but did not identify the specific injury, which could range from a fracture, sprain or tendon problem.

Options For Treating Knee Injuries

(Editor’s note: Each month the Outdoors section features a guest fitness columnist covering various types of exercise. This month’s specialty is skiing.) Claude Herman, M.D., is an or thopaedic surgeon specializing in arthroscopic suture repair of knee and shoulder injuries. He’s been the director of the Incline Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Clinic in Lake Tahoe since 198 1. There’s been a great deal of controversy in the medical profession as to the treatment of anterior cruciate ligament tears. Surgery or not? If so, arthroscopic or conventional (whereby the knee joint is opened)? If torn, can the ligament be restructured (sutured), or should it be replaced? If replaced, with what type of tissue? Specifically designed instruments inserted through small incisions, or portals, are used in conjunction with the arthroscope to perform a variety of procedures. Common types of arthroscopic surgery include trimming, removing or reconstructing damaged cartilage and ligaments, and smoothing roughened surfaces. Major knee repairs for tears to the ligament (requiring multiple sutures) and patella tendon grafts are now performed with arthroscopic-assisted surgery.

PREP WRAPUP New-Look Carson Wins on Finesse; Erratic Banning Falls to Crenshaw

[Gene Vollnogle] says [Carson] will be more capable of making big plays when Tydus Winans, the Colts’ other starting wide receiver, returns to the lineup. Winans sat out his second consecutive game with a strained achilles tendon, but might return for Thursday’s 7 p.m. game with Banning. Quarterback-defensive back Zac Odom was perhaps Leuzinger’s most determined player. After allowing Hawthorne wide receiver Jermaine Jones to slip past him for a six-yard touchdown catch in the first quarter, Odom tripped and fell on the Hawthorne track. This led to some finger-pointing by Jones. Odom responded by leading Leuzinger to 16 unanswered points in the second quarter, including a two-yard touchdown run. [Hawthorne Coach Goy Casillas] pulled within 16-14 on a 39-yard run by tailback Chris Alexander in the third quarter, but Odom again gave Leuzinger a cushion with a 54-yard touchdown pass to receiver Donald Byrd.

Flyer Mellanby survives hockey nightmare

In a barroom brawl up in cottage country over the summer, [Scott Mellanby] had four tendons severed in his left forearm by a broken beer bottle. The ulnar nerve, which transports feeling to the hand, was slashed. One of two major arteries leading to the hand was also ripped open, resulting in a tremendous loss of blood. After doctors performed the surgery, they saw little or no chance of Mellanby returning to the lineup before late December or early January. Mellanby is literally shooting for a return at the end of this month. If Mellanby’s enthused about his progress, imagine how the injury-plagued Flyers are feeling. Last season’s Wales Conference finalists not only are missing Mellanby, but also his injured linemates, Dave Poulin (broken thumb) and Derrick Smith (sprained ankle). Also in the infirmary are goaltenders Ron Hextall (groin) and Ken Wregget (hamstring) and defenceman Terry Carkner (knee).
